Utility Construction Program

Moving people out of poverty requires creating opportunities and access to skilled jobs. One of the target industries for these available skilled jobs in Illinois is the Utilities Construction industry. With relatively low barriers to entry, competitive wages and benefits, careers in the utilities construction industry can provide excellent opportunities for West Side adults to move out of poverty and into a good paying job, even without a college education or advanced credentials.

Bethel New Life has partnered with ComEd and nineteen of their utility construction partners and trade unions to create an entry level training program and access for minority candidates to the utilities construction and contractor field. The CONSTRUCT program is an 8-week training program that provides industry specific training, support in passing the CDL Class A license, support in passing entry exams for the industry (CASS and Meter Reading tests), job shadowing, as well as targeted skills review in core knowledge areas. Participants engage in classes that are held daily, participate in a career awareness fair, job shadowing, and then have the opportunity to be hired by one of the participating utilities construction industry partners.
